SUMMARY:Engaging Parents in Sacramental Catechesis Part 2 - Shelly Bole
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Parents in Sacramental Catechesis Part  2\nWe say it time and again\, “How do we involve parents and families in catechesis?” Sacramental formation is a unique doorway to engage and involve families in the faith formation of their children. The question is how to get them through the doorway! Part 2 of this series will focus on sacramental retreats for parents and child/teen. \nShelly Bole grew up in the Central Plains of Oklahoma and Kansas. Her first ministry career was in Youth and Young Adult Ministry. After getting tired of sitting on the floor and not able to rebound from lock-ins\, Shelly moved to playing with adults in Catechist Formation. Her degrees are from Newman University with a BS in Pastoral Ministry and a MTS in theology. Shelly has worked as the Director of Catechesis for the Diocese of Shreveport for the past five years. \nMEETING LOCATION: HALL A

SUMMARY:The Power of Unfounded Hope: A True Story - Fr. Sidney Speaks
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Unfounded Hope: A True Story\nThis workshop/talk is a concerted effort to invite the listener into the life and world of someone who dramatically fought the downward pull of hopelessness with the manifested presence of divine grace\, which gave birth to a newfound hope. However\, the goal of the presentation is to not only recount this powerful journey and epic battle of a soul…but to spark through the Spirit\, a sense of one’s own journey of struggle and effort to discover God’s beautiful “unfounded hope”. \nSidney Speaks is a native of Baltimore\, and oldest of nine\, from the beautiful union of the late Sidney Oscar and Lillie Speaks. At the age of 16\, Sidney felt the call of priesthood. Two years later\, he entered the Josephite Fathers formation program in New Orleans\, LA. After graduating from Xavier University in 1994\, he went to Washington\, DC\, and received the Master of Divinity degree in 1999 from Dominican House of Studies. He was ordained a Josephite priest on Dec. 4\, 1999. \nMEETING LOCATION: LAKEVIEW ROOM

SUMMARY:Missionary Catechists: Sharing Hopeful Gifts for Ministry - Kathleen Hendricks
DESCRIPTION:Missionary Catechists: Sharing Hopeful Gifts for Ministry\nCatechists might not consider their classrooms missionary territory but so it is. The role and responsibility of the catechist to share the Good News with others requires the same gifts of the Holy Spirit that nudged the early disciples out of the upper room and into the world as they began their mission of evangelization. Join us as we consider how to put two of these gifts – knowledge and wisdom – to good use in our catechetical efforts and to shine hope into the lives of those we catechize. \nKathy Hendricks is the National Catechetical Consultant for William H. Sadlier and a contributing writer for their materials\, including a weekly blog. Kathy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education\, a Master’s degree in Adult Christian Community Development\, and certification as a spiritual director. Kathy is the author of several books and has over 35 years experience in diocesan and parish catechetical and pastoral ministry. \nSponsored by William H. Sadlier \nMEETING LOCATION: HALL C

SUMMARY:Hope for a Confused Culture - Adam Fuselier
DESCRIPTION:Hope for a Confused Culture\nThis presentation would focus on the need to lead teens to an understanding that their identity is based only in relationship with God. In a culture that continues to encourage teens to choose their own identity\, it is important that we provide clarity. Theology of the Body shows us that\, rather than being defined by what we do\, who we are as men and women has already been decided by our loving God and he has inscribed the call to love within our bodies. \nAdam Fuselier is the Program Director for Dumb Ox Ministries\, a Catholic non-profit organization that brings St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body to thousands each year in creative and dynamic ways. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Ave Maria University in 2011 and is currently completing his Master’s degree in Theology at the Augustine Institute. Adam has journeyed with many young men as they have sought to integrate St. John Paul II’s teachings into their personal lives. \nSponsored by Dumb Ox Ministries \nMEETING LOCATION: ROOM 6

SUMMARY:Forming Young People for Holiness and Hope - Dr. Leonard DeLorenzo
DESCRIPTION:Forming Young People for Holiness and Hope\nThe Culture of Ambitious Multitaskers and the Challenge to Forming Young People for Holiness “The more you can do\, the better.” This maxim of our modern lives is one into which we form and educate our young people. But does our prizing of ambitious multitaskers actually work against the hope of growing in holiness? By broadly analyzing college admissions cultures\, digital media cultures\, resume cultures and the like\, we will begin to reimagine how a change in priorities and practices can stop hindering and start promoting the goals of Christian formation. \nLeonard J. DeLorenzo\, PhD\, teaches theology at the University of Notre Dame\, where he works in the McGrath Institute for Church Life. He is the author of Witness: Learning to Tell the Stories of Grace that Illumine Our Lives (Ave Maria Press\, 2016)\, Work of Love: A Theological Reconstruction of the Communion of Saints (Notre Dame Press\, 2017)\, and the forthcoming What Matters Most: Empowering Young People for Life’s Big Decisions (Ave Maria Press\, 2018). His expertise ranges from theology and spirituality\, to philosophy and ethics\, and to pedagogical strategies and pastoral practice. DeLorenzo served for 13 years as director of Notre Dame Vision\, where he was responsible for forming college students as leaders in ministry and designing faith formation conferences for teenagers. He lives in South Bend\, Indiana\, with his wife\, Lisa\, and their five children. \nSponsored by Ave Maria Press \nMEETING LOCATION: ROOM 4

SUMMARY:Engaging Parents in Sacramental Catechesis Part 1 -Shelly Bole
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Parents in Sacramental Catechesis Part  1\nWe say it time and again\, “How do we involve parents and families in catechesis?” Sacramental formation is a unique doorway to engage and involve families in the faith formation of their children. The question is how to get them through the doorway! Part 1 of this workshop will model what first parent gatherings (for Reconciliation\, Eucharist and Confirmation) would look like: how to set up the room\, prayer table and content.

SUMMARY:A Culture of Hope: The Social Expression of Justice as Mercy - Dr. Jennifer E. Miller
DESCRIPTION:A Culture of Hope: The Social Expression of Justice as Mercy\nWhat is a culture of hope? Hope\, for our salvation and that of others\, begins when mercy and justice are practiced. We see this in Abraham’s negotiations with God for the salvation of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham’s consultation with God “brings a new idea of justice into play:…a divine justice that seeks goodness and creates it through forgiveness that transforms the sinner\, converts and saves him.” (Benedict XVI) What does this mean for issues such as immigration and capital punishment? \nCajun by birth\, Dr. Jennifer E. Miller completed pontifical degrees in theology at the Pontifical Universities of the Angelicum and the Gregorian\, obtaining her doctorate with a thesis in Catholic social doctrine at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in 2013. Former coordinator of studies at the Markets\, Culture and Ethics Research Centre\, Dr. Miller is a professor of moral theology at the Notre Dame Seminary. She focuses on Catholic feminism and Catholic Social Doctrine. \nMEETING LOCATION: ROOM 5

SUMMARY:Different Gifts\, Same Spirit: Creating an Hope-filled Inclusive Learning Community - Carrie Freyer
DESCRIPTION:Different Gifts\, Same Spirit: Creating an Hope-filled Inclusive Learning Community\nWe all know how important it is to help people with special needs enter full participation in the Catholic faith—learning about their faith\, developing their own relationship with God\, participating in worship and liturgy\, parish ministry\, and Catholic social justice initiatives\, but most of us are a bit unsure of how to make that happen.  In this workshop\, we’ll discuss how to recognize and remove barriers to participation for individuals with intellectual\, physical\, emotional\, and sensory differences.  We will specifically explore how to help children and youth welcome all into their catechetical environments. Each participant will receive a copy of Different Gifts\, Same Spirit\, a guide to creating an inclusive learning community. Additional resources and organizations providing help in inclusion will be shared as well. \nCarrie Freyer is the Sales & Marketing Curricula Specialist for Loyola Press. She has worked at Loyola for fourteen years marketing elementary curriculum products as well as helping serve parishes and schools in a variety of roles. Prior to joining Loyola\, Carrie worked in ministry as a Catholic school teacher and catechist for over ten years. SUMMARY:Hope in the Psalms - Fr. Brent Maher
DESCRIPTION:Hope in the Psalms\nSt. Athanasius wisely pointed out to his hearers that the Book of Psalms was effectively like a Bible in miniature\, a place where all human emotion found a voice\, and a directive on how to pray to God. This talk will emphasize the rich tradition of praying the Psalms\, focusing in particular on the integration of the Psalms into one’s life of prayer\, allowing them to become fonts of hope. \nFr. Brent Maher is from Denham Springs\, LA. He attended LSU for two years prior to seminary formation at St. Joseph Seminary College in Covington. In 2006 he graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy and Theological Studies and then continued his formation at Notre Dame Seminary\, attaining his Master of Divinity degree in 2011. Ordained for the Diocese of Baton Rouge\, he now serves as pastor of St. Ann Catholic Church in Morganza\, LA. \nMEETING LOCATION: ROOM 2
